Chapter Seven

Logan overheard everything Chris had said to Maddox. For some stupid reason, probably the mating scar on his neck, whenever the man was out of his sight for more than a couple of hours, especially after that last pissing contest of a mission Duncan had sent him on, well, Logan just got a little on the antsy side.

He needed to find his mate and make sure he was all right. Sometimes he didn’t even let Chris know that he was there because he didn’t want the strong alpha to think he was weak and clingy or something. It was kind of stalkerish, but he couldn’t help himself, and it wasn’t like he watched the man for hours and hours, in the shower and while he slept, so it wasn’t that bad.

Though, the fantasy about getting Chris in the shower was amazing.

But that wasn’t the point. The point was all those terribly sad and horrible things that Chris had confessed to Maddox. Logan had heard Chris speak about it before, but never had he bothered to stop and think that it might be so much worse than it really was.

Logan had made fun of Chris, called him a traitor, to both his own pack, the clan, even any ideals that he might’ve had in the past. Logan had tried to kill the man on the off chance that he was the one responsible for murdering his family, and Chris had never judged him for that. Logan had judged Chris terribly, and yet Chris had never done that same thing to him for the attempted murder, and being a shitty mate in general.

Hearing Chris speaking with Maddox like that was a real eye-opener. Of course it made sense. The man would have to not have any friends. Why would he want to risk getting close to anyone—betas, omegas, anyone—when Clyde would see that and use it against him, hurt the people he cared about whenever Chris failed at something? Were all the men he’d betrayed and left to die so evil?

No, now that Logan thought about it, that wasn’t possible. Chris had confessed to having to turn his back on people he’d genuinely liked and loved in order to save himself, but Logan was at least glad that Chris hadn’t always loved the people he’d been forced to betray.

Logan wanted to speak with the man about this. The urge inside of him to go after Chris and just hug the man was strong, but he needed to get control of himself first. If he looked at Chris right now, after having heard all of that personal information, he was going to turn into an emotional little girl and burst out crying.

Because Chris was now working closely with Duncan, proving to the rest of the clan that he could be a productive member of the group, Logan didn’t have to worry about running into him when he made it back to his bedroom.

He took a few minutes to himself, calming himself down, thinking about everything that had happened in the last few weeks since he’d mated the man.
